On February 7th, PPS spoke at an event organised by the Nuclear Institute’s Young Generation Network. The network, comprised of the leading lights of the next generation of nuclear engineers and scientists, was holding an event to discuss the opportunities and potential of ‘Energy Island’ – the proposal to cluster a wide range of energy facilities around Anglesey – not just nuclear but also biomass, wind, tidal and gas. They asked PPS to join a panel including:
- Horizon (the developer of the next generation nuclear plant),
- Magnox (operator of Wylfa, the nuclear power station nearing the end of its life on the island)
- The Environment Agency
- Energy Island project team
Discussion with the 40 network members present focused on the future skills requirement of Energy Island, the importance of the new developments fitting in with the unique culture, heritage (and language) of the island, and how public perceptions of the construction and operations programme can be managed.
